This special meeting will focus on an urgent concern:
.Our partners are facing an unprecedented financial crisis right now.
Severe shortages, inflation due to currency unification, collapse of the tourism industry and economic upheaval, the pandemic, and the continuing embargo have made life extremely difficult in general and dire for pastors and their ministry in particular.
Pastors are making less money in proportion to the new cost of living and many have seen their salaries devalued to a small fraction of what they once were. This severely affects the work pastors provide for their congregations and communities.
The IPRC has told us that pastors are in desperate need of support, while at the same time, the Cuban church can NOT be dependent on foreign funds for pastors and their mission in the long term. World mission experience has shown poor outcomes when partners fund pastor salaries and we must also avoid potential ethical and legal problems.
To be clear, we specifically can NOT fund pastor salaries.
To best address the immediate crisis, the IPRC recommends that we support their Synod. Our contributions to the Synod allow the Cuban church to best determine the needs of their church and allow them to allocate funds most appropriate to their overall mission. This emergency funding will allow the Synod to support our mutual mission in pastoral solidarity.
We realize that this is a particularly challenging time for Cuban pastors and a difficult time to ask any of us to give. During the pandemic, giving is also complicated by the fact that transferring funds to Cuba is bureaucratic, laborious and expensive.
In 2020, the funds we were able to send to the Cuban church encountered fees of 10% and 17%. However, CPN has now connected with an agency which will charge fees of approximately 2% for the transaction. This avenue makes more funds available directly to support the IPRC. We want to seize this opportunity, and for that reason, CPN will transfer all funds together, once all funds are received.
While the IPRC is encouraging partner support for the Synod during the current emergency, some in the U.S. may also wish simultaneously to continue to fund specific projects (such as Living Waters, SET, or individual partner churches). In that case, along with your check noting “Synod Support” in the memo line, please include a separate check with the designation for your specific project, written in the memo line.
Please send funds by check payable to Shepherd of the Valley Presbyterian Church with either "Synod Support" or your specific project in the memo line (but be sure to avoid writing Cuba on any check) to:
Bryan Beck, CPN Treasurer

Los Ranchos, NM 87107
