PREPARE THE WAY 2020 ADVENT CURRICULUM
Any church or individual in the presbytery is invited to engage in a 4-week Advent exploration based on the lectionary and entitled, Prepare the Way: Artist as ‘Incarnator,’ Prophet, Priest, and Servant. This series is for everyone, not just those who consider themselves artists. Curriculum author Jean Homrighausen says, “We are all creative beings, made in the image of God. I don’t consider myself artistic, but I enjoy creative pursuits and spiritual practices, like lectio divina and centering prayer. I have come to understand creativity as a spiritual practice. This curriculum brings together spiritual practices along with creative faith expression (photo-journaling, painting, collaging, writing a Rule of Life, poetry, etc.) in order to encourage us all to think more imaginatively about our faith. By expressing our faith creatively together around a common theme, Advent, our faith is deepened, and our worship life is enriched during this season of preparation for Christ’s coming again."
Jean Homrighausen, certified Christian Educator in the PC(USA), elder, and member of Maitland Presbyterian Church, is a 3rd year Master of Divinity student at Columbia Theological Seminary. She is currently involved in a supervised ministry with Rev. Dr. Helen Debevoise and Potter’s Hand, Park Lake Presbyterian Church’s art ministry. Jean is working closely with Potter's Hand to explore the area of Faith and the Arts through developing curriculum and exploring ways in which to expand Faith and the Arts in the community.
The hope is that additional churches will consider forming groups like Potter’s Hand at Park Lake for the purpose of encouraging one another in creative expression of faith as a spiritual practice as well as promoting the use of liturgical art in worship.
If you or your church would like to take part in this advent curriculum, please contact Jean Homrighausen at email@example.com. The curriculum is free. She will also be leading the series on Zoom, beginning with an introductory session Tuesday, Nov. 10, 7-8 pm EST. Email Jean so that she may send you the zoom link.
