Partners in Domestic Violence Prevention
Often pastors and other trusted friends at church are the first to hear from people fearful and ashamed as they face threat of domestic violence. Often we do not know what to offer beyond a listening ear. Jerry Demings, Mayor of Orange County, recently hosted a day for faith leaders on domestic violence awareness and prevention. The meeting included leaders from three agencies in Orange County that provide services for people caught up in domestic violence. Neuvo Sendero specializes in work with the Latino community. Stand Up Survivor with offices in downtown Orlando and Winter Park offers services in English, Spanish, Portuguese and Haitian Creole. Harbor House has offered services in the greater Orlando for more than 20 years. All welcome calls from church leaders and provide advice on handling delicate situations. In addition, help is available from the local hotline 407-886-2856, the Florida hotline 800-500-1119 and the national hotline 800-799-7233. We are often the first stop for help, but isn’t it good to know we have partners?
