September is here, which means soon most sessions will begin work on their congregation’s 2020 budget, if that process has not already begun. Please read on for some information that may be helpful to your session’s budget-building process.
Per capita apportionment for General Assembly and the Synod of South Atlantic will not change in 2020. General Assembly per capita will remain at $8.95 per active member, and Synod at $1.50. Presbytery’s share of per capita has been $7.55 this year, for a total of $18.00. Presbytery will make any change to per capita at the November Council meeting. As a reminder, 2020 per capita is based on active member totals as of December 31, 2018. (019 membership affects 2021 per capita.)
Central Florida Presbytery is grateful for the per capita payments and mission support contributions that we receive from our congregations. Like our sessions, we try to budget as accurately as possible. Reporting annual pledges to the Presbytery Office helps us in the budgeting process, just as annual stewardship campaigns provide needed information for session decision-making.
Recently, in a meeting of the Budget Committee, we discussed the form that is used for sessions to report their mission pledges to the presbytery. We noted that we only had reports from 12 of our 63 congregations on intended giving in 2019. (However, at the mid-point of the year, we had received mission contributions from 40 of our 63 congregations.) We suspect that some of the information we are hoping to receive is slipping through some cracks somewhere, including in our process of communication to and from sessions.
Towards the end of the year, the presbytery sends out no small numbers of annual reports: information about GA statistical and clerk’s summary reports, reports about insurance, reports requested from presbytery committees, annual necrology reports, and so on. It is easy for the mission pledge report to get lost in the midst of all of these communications from the presbytery. We are in the process of redesigning this report form and intend to send it earlier in the season and as a stand-alone email. Please watch for this email this fall and respond accordingly.
