The Council’s Office Relocation Task Force has recommended and the Council has approved a new location for the Central Florida Presbytery offices. In December the current office on Magnolia in Orlando will be filled with bins and boxes as we pack to move. The new office will be on Maguire Boulevard in Orlando beside Fashion Square Mall.
As a reminder of why we have been in this process, we have been concerned about the increase in costs to lease our present location. In addition, we have wanted to move further east from our present location to get away from the continued headaches of dealing with the ever-changing nature of I-4. Also, moving further east would be more accessible for our coastal churches.
At the June presbytery meeting, an update was given on our search for a new office location, and we reported that we were negotiating a lease and tenant improvements on 3,000 square feet along University Blvd. in Winter Park. Unfortunately, as we were closing in on an agreement, that space was rented out from under us to a company that wanted the entire space immediately and without as many improvements.
The Office Relocation Task Force of renewed its search and identified three options:
Remaining where we are for either one or five years. (2,069 square feet)
Leasing just over 3,000 square feet off University near UCF. (Quadrangle building)
Leasing just under 3,000 square feet along Maguire Blvd. beside Fashion Square Mall (Essex building)
The Maguire Boulevard option was recommended to Presbytery Council and received approval during a special meeting which Council held on August 28.
We chose the Maguire Boulevard option over the other two because emaining where we are will cost $10,000 more annually than current rent, and $13,000 if we stayed for only one year. The Quadrangle location was a nice unit on the first floor, but the cost of rent was even more than where we are now, and we have been looking for a move that is at least a parallel one, in terms of cost. We will achieve that with the move to the Maguire location, plus have about 900 more square feet of useable space.
The Maguire unit is on the second floor of the building, with both a wide and gradual staircase to the second floor and an elevator. The additional space will allow us to have a conference room large enough to hold all our committee meetings, including the Committee on Ministry and Council, which have been held elsewhere than the presbytery office since 2013. This conference room will also be configured to make participation by Zoom conferencing easier to accommodate. We will also have an extra office to be used by part-time staff members Meredith Walker Hampton and Barbara Sayles when they need it, and by other groups, such as subcommittee meetings.
As October begins, we have reached an agreement with the owners of the Maguire location on the necessary tenant improvements to shape the office as we want it for our needs. We are hopeful that the renovations can be completed by early December, when the move will take place. Arrangements have been made with a group to coordinate our move, which we hope to initiate after the stated meeting on December 3. We are currently negotiating the final language on the lease agreement for this space.
The Maguire location is on Maguire Blvd about one block north of Colonial Drive (Route 50), across the street from Fashion Square Mall and behind Target. Coming from the east, most will take the East-West Expressway (408) to the Crystal Lake exit and turn right. (Crystal Lake Blvd. becomes Maguire Blvd as one passes Robinson and Livingston Streets.) From the west, exit 408 at Bumby Street and take South Street to Crystal Lake and turn left. People coming from the Daytona Beach direction can take 417 (Central Florida Greeneway) from Sanford to Colonial Drive and head east to Maguire, or continue to 408 and exit at Crystal Lake.
Once the move takes place and we get settled into the new location we will schedule an open house where people can come to visit our new location!
