Greetings from the Moderator AUGUST 2018
I had the privilege, along with several others, of participating in the installation of Rev. Sheryl Sumlin-Walker at Pastor of the United Presbyterian Church, Daytona Beach. As we entered for the service, I commented to Sheryl about the impressive number of attendees. The weather was terrible, even dangerous in same areas, there was standing room only in the sanctuary for this service. What was most impressive was the number of sisters and brothers that had come from other communities of faith.
The Commission included representatives from churches in the presbytery, the presbytery office, honorably retired clergy, and others. That is expected. But also there to witness the installation of this pastor were members from several other congregations.
At the risk of missing a church community I will not name them, but I was impressed by the willingness of the Central Florida Presbytery community to come together of this rainy day to celebrate with our sister in Christ as she assumes the new role of shepherding the United Presbyterian flock.
We call ourselves a “connectional church.” On July 22, 2018 we demonstrated what that means.
It is my prayer that our congregations will feel that connection as we partner together to witness to our communities, reach out in missions near and far, and share the love of Christ in all we do and say.
