Seeking the Face of God
How many times were you completely taken by surprise when you heard a couple you knew that seemed so fine are getting a divorce? The first question that comes to mind is always “what happened to them?” There may be many answers to this question but one of them is that they just drifted apart.
This drift starts when life intervenes in such a big way in a relationship that those involved start to lose focus on the other person. Too many distractions make you blind to the person next to you and as the drift continues it brings with it a disconnect between the individuals involved which leads to miscommunication, confusion and frustration. Sadly, some become so alien to each other that the relationship then ends.
To prevent this “drift” couples need to purposefully work on staying close to one another. Spending quality time together, continuously learning from one another the new nuances of change that takes place in all of us. It takes time, energy and focus.
So, what about God? If we are in a relationship with Him it may also be true that a drift may occur. In this case not God drifting away from us but we are drifting away from God and for the same reasons we drift away from others that we are in a relationship with. Those demands of life that gobbles up our time for there is always something that needs to be done or taken care of. Because God is invisible He may get the least of our time. For Him only the small bits are left after we are completely exhausted in dealing with the here and now.
The problem is that this drift away from God also brings confusion, misunderstanding and frustration. The reason to be that we are not close enough to Him to know His heart and purposes. To prevent this drift, we actively need to seek His face, His presence His person. This will take time, energy and commitment. It may be time to sit with God for a moment. To be still in His presence, to think about Him and His purpose for you, to see His creation as His gift of presence to us and to think how I can serve Him in obedience.
Sitting with God, seeking His presence brings amazing benefits: Clarity about His purposes will come, understanding of His will, will come. Joy and peace will come for sitting in the presence of God almighty makes you realize He wants to take our burdens and anxieties to Him.
Find the time, the place just to be with Him. He wants it more than you do.
“Before the heart unlocks itself for the world, God wants to open it for himself; before the ear takes in the countless voices of the day, it should hear in the early hours the voice of the Creator and Redeemer. God prepared the stillness of the first morning for himself. It should remain his.”
