Greetings from the Moderator MARCH 2021
A Strange Partnership
“Wouldn’t it be great if Jesus was still around today”, I have heard so many believers say. It would make it so much easier to follow Him and believe in Him. Just imagine how quickly we would be able to resolve countless theological issues.
But Jesus does not share our enthusiasm. In John 16:7 He said that His departure would be of benefit to us. That the “Helper” would come to “partner” with us in doing God’s Kingdom works.
C.S Lewis noted: “God seems to do nothing of Himself which He can possibly delegate to His creatures. He demands us to do slowly and blunderingly what He could do in a blink of an eye.”
Just think about it for a moment, that the Almighty God who can create a universe by speaking the Word, partners with us, to bring His presence and promises to this world. In 1 Corinthians 12 this partnership is defined as being the body of Jesus in this world. To “have” and “be” the body of Jesus! Him partnering with us in the most intimate way by asking of us to be Him as we interact and function in this world.
This becomes very real if we realize God does not own a bank, a hospital, a group of social workers or any structure or organization to do His work. No – He chose His Church, His people to fill in for all the above. So, if a widow prays for financial help to pay her bills, God will not send a check from heaven. No – He will wait for His body to take the check, touch the shoulder, and show the care that He Himself would do.
It may be time to ask as you wake up in the morning: “Lord what are you going to do with our body today?” And then try to see what He would see; consider how He would respond and act in the way that He would with His body.
A strange partnership: God and me. God in me. God through me. This can only work if we really allow the Spirit to be the Helper for me to be who I am in Christ. A reminder for us as His church to never forget we are the instrument He chose to touch this world.
